In Europe: Travels through the Twentieth Century by Geert Mak
Loved this book though I felt that his ideas about the IRA were somewhat off beam, but maybe I come at that from a very particular perspective. The concept is interesting and timely: is it my imagination or did he run out of energy towards the end? I felt that there was too little focus on the contrast between past and present at times, which he stated was one of his aims. Nonetheless, the book kept me absorbed and gave me a fresh perspectives on events which I thought I understood pretty well.
